About

Haozhou Wang had the extremely good fortune of discovering his own extraordinary connection to music by the time he was only three years old. Witnessing a profound performance by a family friend during the celebration of   Chinese New Year, he was instantly mesmerized by the enchanting beauty of the robust tones emanating from the piano, and immediately knew that he wanted to try it for himself.

As he grew up, the practicality of taking daily lessons for hours at a time while his friends were outside playing took its toll on his interest, and began to become a chore. Thankfully, he eventually watched a documentary on the renowned talents & pure determination of pianist Heeah Lee, an artist from South Korea that overcame all odds to pursue her dreams, despite having only four fingers & amputated legs. It was her incredible example of endurance  and perseverance that renewed Haozhou’s motivation, and inspired him to practice harder than he ever had before, rediscover his passion, and find his true voice through the art of the piano. In fact, ever since he saw the remarkable journey of Heeah Lee turning her dreams into her daily reality, his dedication to the art and accomplishing his own goals, never wavered.

With a renewed perspective, Haozhou built on the gift of his innate talent by developing a stunning level of technique that enhanced his natural ability to communicate through the ivory keys. Simultaneously keeping a very busy schedule of performing in recitals and festivals, while also maintaining his academic studies, Haozhou wasn’t  merely immersed in the arts – he was thriving within them.

Since 2011, he has accumulated an impressive list of awards and accolades, including first prizes at the Weatherford International Piano Competition in Dallas, the Viseu International Piano Competition in Portugal, The Juilliard School Piano Concerto Competition, The Juilliard School Bachauer Piano Competition, the YAMAHA USasu International Piano Competition in Arizona, and the Cadenza Cup National Youth Piano Competition in China. These achievements span from his original home in China to his time at The Juilliard School in New York, and include performances in extraordinary venues around the world, including France, Italy, and Portugal. Over his nineteen years of musical education, Haozhou has had the honor of performing at legendary venues such as Alice Tully Hall, Salle Cortot Concert Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, and the National Centre for the Performing Arts in China. While pursuing his Master’s Degree in Music at The Juilliard School on a full scholarship, he has been privileged to study with many esteemed teachers and world-class icons, including Matti Raekallio, Susan Starr, Ignat Solzhenitsyn, Gary Graffman (who taught Lang Lang), and his dedicated mentor, Robert McDonald.

A genuine testament to what can be achieved through hard work & commitment to the craft, Haozhou’s expressionistic excellence is the result of a lifetime dedicated to refining his talents. To watch him play piano is to experience how music flows throughout the essence of our shared humanity, and hear how it is authentically felt within every fibre of our DNA.  He is relentlessly inspired by the way music can move us in a variety of ways, from the joys of playing live, to the emotionally empowering ability it has to help heal the mind, body, and soul of all who listen. A proudly perpetual student of the arts that continues to believe there is always another level that can be reached, Haozhou embraces every opportunity to learn & share his music with audiences all over the world, both live in-person & through social media channels online. As he continues to excel with his craft & establish his   name even further in the realm of Classical music, he’s also become a teacher of high regard in his own right, with  all of his students being accepted to prestigious schools like the Manhattan School of Music’s Precollege Division,   and his own alma mater at The Juilliard School Precollege Division in New York. Proud to inspire a world filled with music connoisseurs one note at a time, Haozhou was truly born destined to play the piano, and make the most of  every moment.

“There is no theory. You have only to listen. Pleasure is the law. I love music passionately. And because I love it, I try to free it from barren traditions that stifle it. It is a free art, gushing forth—an open-air art, boundless as the elements, the wind, the sky, the sea. It must never be shut in and become an academic art.”

Claude Debussy
